Castles and museums

The Trentino alto Adige region offers its visitors a wide choice of culture with important museums and many smaller, more minority museums throughout the area. In Trentino a visit to the MART, one of the major museums of modern and contemporary art in Italy, is well worth while, as is The Science Museum with the inauguration, in 2013, of the new Muse site designed by Renzo Piano.

In Bolzano, at the Archaeological Museum, it is possible to view the famous mummy “Otzi”, or explore the world of mountains at the Messner Mountain Museum Firmian, or that of plants strolling like Sissi in the Trauttmansdorf Castle Gardens on the sunny slope above Merano.

As an area of exchange links between north and south and an important land of conquests for the control of markets, it is rich with manors and castles, silent witnesses of long-gone stories and eras.

The over 300 castles in Trentino are, in part, open to visitors. Not to be missed is the Buonconsiglio Castle, Torre dell’Aquila and Thun Castle, which has been recently reopened following seventeen years of restoration.
